Appointed Forum Participant by Governor Tom Ridge (R) in 1998

As Chief of the Division of Nuclear Safety, Richard Janati is responsible for implementation of programs for nuclear safety oversight, nuclear power plant emergency response, and low-level radioactive waste disposal.

Before assuming his current position in 1994, Janati served in two other capacities at the Department of Environmental Protection: as Acting Chief of the Nuclear Safety Section, and as a nuclear engineer in the Division of Nuclear Safety. He also worked as a Utility Valuation Engineer for Pennsylvania’s Public Utility Commission.

Prior to joining state government, Janati was a Nuclear Fuel Safety and Licensing Engineer for Westinghouse Electric Corporation, and a Research Assistant at the University of Massachusetts — Lowell Research Center.

Janati graduated with a bachelor of science degree in nuclear engineering from the University of Massachusetts in Lowell and earned a master of science degree in energy resources and technology from the University of Pittsburgh.

Janati is a member of the American Nuclear Society, the Conference of Radiation Control Program Directors, and the Host State Technical Coordinating Committee. He has co-authored papers presented at three national and international conferences on low-level radioactive waste-related issues.
