As the Vice Chair of the Southwestern Low-Level Radioactive Waste Commission, Aubrey Godwin is responsible for assisting the Chair in oversight of compact activities. He is also Co-Chair of the commission’s Finance Committee. He has been Arizona’s representative on the commission since mid-1993, and is Past Chair of the commission’s Committee on Interim Solutions.

In his capacity as Director of the Arizona Radiation Regulatory Agency, Godwin is responsible for radiation health and safety programs in the state.

Prior to his service for Arizona, Godwin held a number of positions in the Alabama Department of Health including Director of the Radiological Health Branch, Assistant Director in the Division of Radiological Health, and as a radiation physicist and chemist. From 1983 to 1992 Godwin served as the Alabama Commissioner to the Southeast Compact Commission, where he was the Chair of the Technical Advisory Committee.

Godwin received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Mississippi, and a master’s degree from the University of Michigan.

He is a member of a number of professional organizations including the Health Physics Society (Past President of the Alabama chapter); the Conference of Radiation Control Program Directors (Past Chair, and member of task groups on bonding and perpetual care, emergency planning, and transportation); the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s Agreement States Organization; and the Interorganizational Advisory Committee to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (Past Chair). He is Co-Chair of the Compatibility Work Group, a member of the KI (potassium iodide) Core Group sponsored by the NRC, and was a reviewer of the World Health Organization’s "Guidelines for Stable Iodine Prophylaxis.” He also teaches Sunday school.
